Android Auto, CarPlay, AirTag and smart home fixes in SA

By the AllThingsMobile team Published 8 min read

Quick answer

If Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, AirTag or your smart home app stops working, the cause is usually your phone settings, permissions, cable, network or app version. Start with the simple checks below before you buy a new phone, tracker or head unit.

If Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, AirTag or your smart home app stops working, you can usually fix it without replacing anything. In South Africa, the most common causes are a bad cable, missing permission, stale Bluetooth pairing, battery saving, or weak mobile data on the network you are using.

Start with power, signal, permissions and pairing in that order. That fixes most cases faster than buying a new phone, tracker or head unit.

Do these five checks before you change any settings

These are the fastest tests, and they solve a lot of problems. Do them in order so you do not waste time chasing the wrong fault.

  1. Restart both devices. Restart your phone, then switch the car off fully and start it again. For a smart home device, restart the phone first before you power-cycle the device.
  2. Test your internet connection. Open a website or maps app on your phone. If it does not load, your app may be fine and your data connection may be the real problem.
  3. Check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and location. Car systems, trackers and setup apps often need all three turned on.
  4. Check app permissions. After an update, your phone can reset location, Bluetooth, microphone, notifications or background access.
  5. Swap the cable. For wired Android Auto or CarPlay, a cable can still charge your phone but fail for data.

Fix Android Auto when it connects badly or will not start

Android Auto problems usually come from the phone connection, app permissions or the car's saved pairing. If it worked yesterday and fails today, test the cable and permissions first.

Check these settings on your Android phone

  • Open Settings and make sure Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location are on.
  • Open Settings > Apps > Android Auto and check permissions.
  • Open Settings > Battery and remove battery restrictions for Android Auto, Google Maps and your calling or music apps.
  • Open the Play Store and update Android Auto, Google Maps and any app you use through the car.

Reset the pairing properly

  1. Delete the phone from the car's paired devices list.
  2. Delete the car from your phone's Bluetooth list.
  3. Restart the phone and the car.
  4. Reconnect from scratch.
  5. If your car uses wired Android Auto, test another USB port if the car has one.

Samsung users should also check that battery saving, Modes or Routines have not limited background activity. If you are using a recent phone such as the Samsung Galaxy S26, the problem is more likely to be the cable, USB port or settings than raw performance.

Worked example: when the network is the real fault

Example: You leave Sandton with Android Auto connected and Google Maps running. Near a client site, the car screen still shows Android Auto, but live traffic stops, voice search fails and WhatsApp voice notes do not load.

That usually means Bluetooth is fine but your mobile data path is weak. Before you reset the whole system, test the same route or building on another network if you can.

Fix Apple CarPlay when your iPhone charges but CarPlay does not open

CarPlay faults look a lot like Android Auto faults, but the iPhone settings are different. Start with Siri, restrictions and the cable.

Check these settings on your iPhone

  • Open Settings > Siri and make sure Siri is enabled.
  • Open Settings > General > CarPlay and check whether your car appears there.
  • Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and make sure CarPlay is allowed.
  • Open Settings > Privacy and confirm Bluetooth, location and microphone access where needed.

Remove and re-add the car

  1. Forget the car under Settings > General > CarPlay.
  2. Forget the iPhone in the car's Bluetooth or phone menu.
  3. Restart the iPhone and the car.
  4. Pair again.

If you use wired CarPlay, change the cable before you do anything more drastic. A cable that still charges the phone can still fail for data, which is why CarPlay often looks broken when the cable is the only issue.

This applies even on expensive phones. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts from R30,699 on our latest check, but a premium phone cannot fix a damaged cable.

Fix AirTag location delays and know when an AirTag is the wrong tool

An AirTag does not behave like a live vehicle tracker. It updates through Apple's Find My network, so location updates can lag if there are not enough nearby Apple devices to relay its position.

Check these basics first

  • Make sure Find My is enabled on your iPhone.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is on.
  • Check whether the AirTag battery may be flat.
  • Open the Find My app and refresh the item view.
  • Move to an area with better signal and more passing devices.

If you expect minute-by-minute tracking for a company car, delivery bike or staff route, an AirTag is the wrong tool. It is better for keys, a bag or a laptop sleeve than for live business tracking.

This catches a lot of drivers out in quieter industrial areas, on long road trips and at rural stops. Delayed updates do not always mean the AirTag is faulty.

Fix smart home apps that stop working on mobile data or outside the house

If your gate motor, alarm, cameras, plugs or lights stop responding in the app, the problem may be the phone's connection to the cloud service, not the device at home. Start with the phone before you reset the hardware.

Use this order for the fastest result

  1. Open a website on your phone to confirm mobile data is working.
  2. Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or from Wi-Fi to mobile data, and try again.
  3. Open the app store and update the smart home app.
  4. Log out and back in.
  5. Check permissions for notifications, Bluetooth, location and local network access if the app uses setup pairing.
  6. Only then power-cycle the smart device.

On Android, battery optimisation can stop smart home apps from refreshing in the background. On iPhone, notification or background settings can stop alerts even when the device is online.

Know when the phone is the problem, not the accessory

If the same faults keep coming back across several apps, your phone may be the weak point. This is more likely if the USB port is loose, Bluetooth drops on multiple devices, or the phone keeps killing apps in the background.

You do not need a flagship for reliable basics, but you may need a newer phone if your current one struggles with modern app versions. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 starts from R4,999 and the Samsung Galaxy A37 5G starts from R7,034 on our latest checks.

Example: If your old phone drops Android Auto, misses WhatsApp customer messages and fails to refresh your alarm app, replacing one cable will not solve the whole problem. In that case, a newer phone or contract can make more sense. Our tracked deals include the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 on Vodacom at R349/month over 36 months with 1GB data, and the Samsung Galaxy A37 5G on Cell C at R349/month over 36 months with 1.5GB data. You can check more options on our latest phone contract deals page.

If your team relies on chat apps for customer work, it also helps to reduce dependence on one person's handset. FlowTriage, made by the team behind AllThingsMobile, gives teams one shared inbox for WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Telegram, SMS, email and web chat, with a mobile app for staff. It will not fix CarPlay or a tracker, but it can reduce disruption when one phone has app problems or needs replacing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Android Auto connect but not show maps or music?

The usual causes are weak mobile data, restricted background activity or missing permissions. Check signal first, then battery settings and app permissions.

Why is Apple CarPlay charging my iPhone but not opening?

The cable may still provide power but fail for data. Replace the cable first, then remove and re-add the car in CarPlay settings.

Why is my AirTag not updating location in South Africa?

AirTag updates depend on Apple's Find My network, not constant GPS tracking. In quieter areas or on long road routes, updates can be delayed.

Why does my smart home app work on Wi-Fi but not mobile data?

That usually points to a mobile data, permissions or app login issue on your phone. Test another connection and log out and back in to the app.

Should I replace the tracker, head unit or phone first?

Replace nothing until you have tested the cable, permissions, pairing, app updates and network signal. If multiple apps fail across the phone, the phone is the better suspect.
